| About the Artist | (1838-1895, Dutch) Martens was a Dutch genre painter known for having studied under Nicolaas Pieneman. He worked and lived in Amsterdam before moving to various cities such as Rome, The Hague and Berlin starting in 1871. Martens participated in several exhibitions in Holland between 1859 and 1894 and also at the Glass Palace in Munich. During his stay in Rome, Martens was a member of the artistic association "Gli Acquarellisti" and mainly created genre paintings depicting scenes of Italian life and its folklore as well as landscapes. In addition, he also painted costume genre scenes of the 17th and 18th centuries. Martens died on 2 February 1895 in Berlin. |
