Battenberg later became a professor of sculpture at San Jose University until retiring to pursue making sculpture full time.
He was best known for his series of bronzes treating pilots as well as for his treatment of North American wildlife. Very often his wildlife depictions employed a style he likened to three-dimensional drawing.
