Single Strand Necklace of 29 Fluted and 30 Hogan Sterling Silver Beads

Alfred Joe

About The Single Strand Necklace of 29 Fluted and 30 Hogan Sterling Silver Beads

Materials to create all fabricated parts of this necklace are sterling silver.  The beads consist of two hamd-made die formed halves from mill-rolled silver sheet.  These halves are each center pierced, then soldered together.

This junction seam is then filed and the bead is hand finished to the desired desgree of shine.  The fluted beads were oxidized, then polished to highlight.

The clasp is a hook and eye made of heavy gauge sterling sheet.  Saw cut and shaped, it bears the artist's signature stamp, a vertically conjoined upper case A and J within a horseshoe form.

Heavy gauge sterling wire attached the clasp to the "wheat/foxtail" chain on which the beads are strung in an alternating pattern:  hogan, then fluted.

About the Artist (Navajo, Dineh, born circa 1950)  Alfred Joe apprenticed with his uncle, Colbert Joe, then studied at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff.  He received multiple awards, among them Artist of the Year in 2001 and 2009 from the Indian Arts and Crafts Association.

Joe is now teaching his son, Bryan Joe and grandson, Derrick Joe, the fine art of jewelry making while helping his younger brother, Larry Joe, get his start.

Now living in Winslow, Arizona, where he continues to create beautiful jewelry and fine beads, in sterling silver, gold and even Mokume, Alfred Joe explores new and ancient ways to produce exciting hues, patterns and textures, keeping his art both rooted in tradition and reaching for the heavens !
