| About the Artist | (Born 1929, American) "Moishe Smith was born in Chicago in 1929. He received his B.A. from the New School in 1950 and his M.F.A. and M.F. degrees from the State University of Iowa in 1953 and 1995, respectively. While at the University, he studied and worked with Mauricio Lasansky whose work has deeply influenced him. From 1955 through 1959, he taught at Southern Illinois University. Fulbright grants which took him to Italy, were awarded to him for the years 1959-60 and 1960-61. For some time he lived in Rapallo, a small coastal town on the Mediterranean, followed up by teaching at the University of Wisconsin. Smith had been an active participant in major exhibitions throughout the world since 1950, including the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Boston Printmakers, 1964 Brooklyn Museum Biennial, Library of Congress- Self-Portrait in Prints, Galleria Santa Croce and the Galleria II Torcoliere in Florence. He was the recipient of more than fifteen major prizes including two Purchase Awards from the Library of Congress in 1959, Philadelphia Museum Award, Achenbach Foundation Award, Pennsylvania Academy Purchase Prize, and the Boston Museum Award.
