About the Artist | (Born 1935, Santa Clara pueblo) Daughter of Margaret Tafoya, sister of Virgia Ebelacker, Lee Tafoya, Jennie Trammel, Mela Youngblood, Luann Tafoya, Mary Esther Archuleta, Shirley Tafoya, Toni Roller's awards span two pages of Gregory Schaaf's book Pueblo Indian Pottery 750 Artist Biography. Toni's earliest memory of making pottery was as a six year old, fashioning marbles out of clay, cooked in her mother's firing pit. Proudly the artist gives credit to her mother, Margaret Tafoya for learning the traditional pueblo pottery. The first year she sold her pottery was in 1968. The list of museums hosting Roller's work is extensive, as is the list of publications marking her work. Museums in Germany and Italy include her work in additional to those in the United States. Schaaf lists Roller's preferred designs to include feathers, melon, gourd, bear paw, avanyu, kiva steps and nature signs. |
