About Jean Bales
(1946-2004) Iowa American Indian heritage  Bales typically depicted the culture and everyday life of Native American Plains people.  

A professional artist since 1970, Bales earned her BA at the Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts in 1969.  In 1973 she was awarded the Oklahoma Governor's Cup for Outstanding Indian Artist of the Year.  Almost ten years later in 1982 she was awarded the Oklahoma Diamond Jubilee for the Outstanding Woman of the Southern Plains. In 1984 she received the Indian Arts and Crafts Association's Artist of the Year.  In 1994 she received the coveted Helen Hardin Award at Indian Market in Santa Fe.  

Bales captured First or Best of Division or Best of Class during the following years at Indian Market 1978, 1979, 1980, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1991.
