(1932-2010 Zia pueblo) Taught to make pottery by the grandmother of Sofia's husband, Trinidad Medina was considered once of the best Zia potters.
Sofia's name became associated with making some of the largest Zia ollas during the second half of the 20th century.
Her sense of humor was clear when she explained how pottery making helps one's spirit: "Spiritually, the pottery can ease your mind. I do sing a lot when
I am working . . . worse than a radio!"
Nearly a full page of Gregory's Schaaf's publication Southern Pueblo Pottery 2,000 Artist Biographies is devoted to the Sofia Medina. Nearly every publication
addressing American Indian pottery references this artist's work.
