About The Polished & Painted Blackware Jar

Page 67 of Richard Spivey's book simply titled "Maria" published in 1979 states the following:

"An extremely important point in regard to signatures is the fact that Maria's youngest sister, Clara Montoya, who, since was young helped Maria with polishing and would at times, when she completed polishing a vessel, put Maria's own signature.  The obvious differences between Clara's signature and that of Maria herself is that the M is printed instead of written, and there is a circle over the i instead of a dot.  This "irregular" signature seems to have taken place only during the Marie-and-Julian period (1907--1943).  As the importance of authentic signatures was increasingly realized, Clara's signing of pottery was stopped.  These vessels signed "Marie & Julian" by Clara, however, are unquestionably Maria pottery."
