About The Five Bar Sterling Cuff with Fluted Repousse Button Terminals

Mill-rolled sterling silver of heavy gauge, was used to create this fine, five bar, classic Navajo design cuff.  John Begay sawcut the form from a single piece of sheet, rounding the ends for the repousse fluted bottom terminals he created using a two-part hand-carved steel die.

The bars or "strands" of the bracelet were created by marking the spaces between with a deep chisel line. At the end of each line, a small hole was drilled, through which was threaded the fine blade of a jeweler's coping saw.  The strands were cut apart, only to the terminal areas.  They were then evenly spread in a gentle arc and carefully finished, each to a perfect half round bar.  The "button" terminals have a distinctive rocker engraved outlined, which is a skillful touch only artists of John Begay's caliber can do.

Stylish, timeless and affordable, this Navajo expression in silver warrants being passed down through the ages.

About John Begay

Although John has family members who were well recognized as silversmiths during the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's, he learned to tufa cast and to perform general silversmithing by watching friends and co workers beginning in 1972.

He has worked alternatively in Flagstaff, Winslow and Scottsdale making an assortment of items such as bracelets, rings and earrings. From 1985 until 2006 John was employed by the White Hogan in Scottsdale, Arizona, making and repairing jewelry for Jon Bonnell.

During the 1980's Begay participated in the Heard Museum's Indian Market. In recent years he has assisted rather famous jewelry designers, Victor Beck and Jesse Monongya with the execution of their jewelry. John's classic sense of design is matched with his highly refined craftmanship.
