This tool was prized and maintained with singular respect.
Salvaged spring steel, brass or bronze bar, oak and steel wire or nails were used to create this practical and pleasing to look at implement.
Spring steel for the blade was forged and filed to create the wide, tapering blade with a long tine, in one piece. Thickness of both blade and tine taper outward from placement of the brass hand guard, which consists of a hammered bar, cut to shape and pierced to slide over the tine, prior to applying the handle.
The oak handle or grip is carved of a single piece. A single saw cut, four fifths the handle length, was made for securing the blade to this grip. The tine and handle were each pierced in two places where brass wire posts were driven through and hammered on each end, riveting everything securely.
