Deerskin, brain tanned and smoked was used to create the collared moccasin tops. The sole is rawhide, attached to the deerskin with fine, precise stitches of sinew. Sinew was also used to plate the dyed and natural color porcupine quills in an intricate floral design, covering the top of each shoe from toe to just behind the collar.
A deerskin lace is woven in and out of the moccasin, just beneath the decorative cuff, emerging to be tied in front across the long tapered tongue. A lining of course cotton, possibly flour sacking, is stittched to the shoe interior and tongue with exception of the inside sole, which is left bare. Silk twist secures the lining.
"Unknown artist" is appropriate when a work of art is unsigned and a supported opinion about who made it is not available (on Savvy Collector).. "Attributed to" precedes the name of an artist when information suggests that it likely was made by that artist (on Savvy Collector).
