The scarab is an original 1910 form cast of Samian Red Favrile glass. The process of creating this rarest of the Fabrile color range involves gold to achieve its rich, blood hue. The irridescence is an additional procedure by which glass of various mineral contents are added to a molten opalescent glass base.
Gold, when heated in glass turns yellow, then red, requiring an exacting temperature watch. Surface irridescence is created by various means, depending on the range of hue desired. Metal oxides were among the agents incorporated, at molten stage, to effect what appears on the surface, but is actually part of the casting throughout.
The wheat chain is also hand-made of mill drawn wire.
