Sterling silver from ingot, natural Blue Gem mine turquoise and commercial safety and pin base were used to fabric this dramatic pin.
Mary Kalestewa was known and revered for her all turquoise inlay forms of deities common to both Zuni and Hopi Pueblo peoples. This eight piece, hand-cut, bezel set example of her work is displayed beautifully in a frame with simple rows of "rain drop" silver above each "wing" and beneath the tail. Stamped drops on either side of the crown base and at the figure's waist are the only other ornament beside the traditional wire spirals to either side of its turquoise face. Round beaded sterling findings secure a work-hardened silver pin to the back from wing tip to wing tip.

Said to have wings feathered with flint knife blades, he is a protector dwelling in the clouds, represented by his terraced crown, whose other weapons, a rainbow bow and lightning arrows are used in defense of his people. This might deity, half man, half eagle because a part of the heaves in Ms. Kalestewa's representation of him. He is everywhere above us, watching over us, the ever vigilant Angel. |
