About The Brother, Sister

The purity of this Shona creation by Henry Munyaradzi is unrivalled.  Carved and polished springstone, there is a tenderness in the facial expressions defying the material they are made of.

About Henry Munyaradzi
(1933-1998) This sculptor from Zimbabwe decided at the age of roughly 34 years old, having been a carpenter's assistant, he wanted to sculpt in stone.  He told his wife he was convinced he would be able to carry out the work better than other carvers whose work he had seen.  Tom Blomefield allowed him to become part of the sculptor's community in the village of Tengenenge.

Henry Munyaradzi preferred to use both hard black serpentine and verdite, as well as other softer materials such as green or red serpentine.  A purity of form he devises while garnering expression and spirit.  His subject matter encompassed human figures, animals, plants, birds, insects and reptiles.  This individual without formal education many treat as one of best known of the First Generation Shona sculptors.

Exhibitions of Henry's stone sculptures began within a year of his initial sculpting and took place in several continents and countries:  throughout Africa, Paris, France; Copenhagen, Denmark; Berlin, Germany; Los Angeles, California; London, England; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Washington, D.C.; Sidney, Australia; Wales, UK; Vienna, Austria; Gent, Belgium; Stockholm, Sweden; Chicago, Illinois; Cleveland, Ohio and Sevilla, Spain to name a few venues.  Permanent public collections including his sculptures are also worldwide, numbering in excess of twenty five.
