Bolo tie is made of hand-fabricated sterling silver. Sheet is rolled from ingot. Wire is drawn to make rope twist decoration. Silver drops were stamped using either a fluted stamp of one cut from a file to produce cross hatching.
The figure is intarsia set in bezels. The inlay is a striking composition utilizing the four sacred colors representing the four sacred directions. A Bennett manufactured clip (added in the 1950's) fastens the figure to a hand braided black leather cord of black leather. The tops of hand-stamp decorated sterling are long slender cones each terminated with a silver bead.
Beautifully executed this Rainbow God seems to dance on his black leather cord! The deep blues and greens of the natural turquoise, sunset hue of the abalone and dominance of jet over white pearl shell give a dusky handsomeness to this piece that is visually striking and in good taste. Worn formally or casually by either a gentleman or woman, this fine Zuni made piece is a testament to earthy elegance.
The best book to explain the steps in creating Zuni cluster jewelry is Oscar Branson's Indian Jewelry Making. Volume II. Look at page 48 illustrating each step to create a cluster bracelet.
