About Harold Altman
(1924-2003) Harold Altman was born in New York City in 1924. He attended the Art Students League. before serving in the military in Europe during WWII. He later continued his studies at the Black Mountain College and earned a BFA from the Cooper Union Art School. He studied at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris from 1949-1953.

 Altman served as Assistant Professor at several colleges prior to receiving a full Professorship at Pennsylvania State University in 1962. He lived in the central Pennsylvanian village of Lemont in an old 19th century frame church which served as his studio until his death in 2003. 

Altman spent one third of each year working in Paris.

His work is to be found in many museum collections in the United States. including New York's Museum of Modern Art. the Whitney and Brooklyn Museums. as well as the Victoria and Albert Museum of London. the Stedelijk Museum of Amsterdam. the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Copenhagen and the Bibliotheque Nationale of Paris.
