About the Artist

Born in 1948 Jean Sahme lives at First Mesa on the Hopi reservation in northern Arizona. A granddaughter of Nampeyo, she uses the cornstalk hallmark to sign her pottery, along with her Hopi-Tewa name Sak’ Honsee, which means Tobacco Flower Girl.

She has exhibited her work at the Smithsonian Museum in New York City, the Wheelwright Museum and the SWAIA Indian Market in Santa Fe, the Heard Museum in Phoenix, the Museum of Natural History in Los Angeles and the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff.

Jean Sahme is featured in Fourteen Families in Pueblo Pottery by Dillingham and Hopi-Tewa Pottery by Schaaf.
