About Junichiro Sekino

(1914-1988, Japanese) Although largely self taught, once Sekino settled on making woodblock prints, he fell under the influence of Koshiro Onchi.

Sekino's work often conveys an emotional response to his subject versus a literal one. His portraits clearly project the artist's feeling for the sitter, be they adults or children. There is affection in his depiction of animals such as cats, dogs, rabbits, fish and fowl. They are not merely props to complete a composition.

Another feature of his work is attention to the texture of the grain of wood blocks he has chosen to print from. Often he chose plywood, which has a coarse even grain.
