During World War II, the mining of turquoise for its own sake was forbidden. Copper was the focus for wartime use. Though agate has been used prior to this war restriction, the use of decorative fossil woods found its way back.
This fine example from Bell sterling was partially hand crafted in the bezel setting of a very fine petrified wood cabochon and the beautiful hand stamped side decorations! The finishing is all done by hand.
There is always something special about agatized wood. The pieces selected for jewelry tend to spark the imagination. In this particular stone there is a strong lamp black to chocolate brown number "7" or a tree trunk with a lower branch on a grassy hill with a little group of orange flowers. Turned "upside down", it could be a young tree with turning leaves and exposed roots.
Sometimes a moment of day dreaming helps to pull reality into focus. In which case, think of the "7" as "lucky 7".
