About the Artist | There are three Apache groups: the Western, Jicarilla and the Mescalero. Far greater production and a wider variety of baskets was produced by the Western Apache. Also greater proficiency was demonstrated by the efforts of the Western Apaches. Coiled baskets by the Western Apaches involved a three rod foundation. Common shapes are trays, bowls and jars or ollas. Decoration utilized most frequently involved willow and devil's claw. Less commonly used was the bark of the root of a yucca plant yielding the color red for polychrome examples. Geometric designs are more frequently featured than anthropomorphic or zoomorphic motifs. |
