Victoria Beckham: Modern Muse Among the Masters
Pairing Victoria Beckham (former Spice Girl, wife of David Beckham and current fashion designer) with soon-to-be auctioned Old Master portraits is brilliant marketing designed to ignite interest among celebrity fans and those previously unfocused on Old Master anything.
In the article depicted in Sotheby’s latest salvo Mrs. Beckham poses beside a circle of Leonardo Da Vinci painting of an alluring young woman. What is extra curious is that if you click on the photograph, you slip over to a page inviting purchase of Mrs. Beckham’s green dress in a few remaining sizes (6,10, 14) for the equivalent of $1,975 in American dollars.
Victoria Beckman’s Dover Street store in Mayfair (London) is providing a contemporary setting for portraits by Rubens, Cranach the Elder and others due to be auctioned by Sotheby’s on 4 July 2018 at their evening sale.
Beckham has been blending her interest in fashion and art for some time in this store. She attributes her recent affection for Old Master art having visited The Frick Collection in New York.
Twice Mrs. Beckham uses the words “invest in art”, versus collect art, proving how genuine her responses were. Big ticket artworks are now frequently viewed as investments, at least initially. This represents a shift from collecting first, investing second.
