Dr. Ann Lane Hedlund shared her knowledge of Textiles from the Southwest US and Mexico with just 15 lucky participants, one of whom flew in from Texas for the opportunity Saturday November 10 from 9:30 am to 4 pm. Staged at the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ in the Arizona State Museum, we were taught how to identify fiber twist directions (S or Z), how to count fiber plies, tie back indicators or evidence of flipped weavings. How to judge selvage cords with respect to weavings both within and below the United States. Cotton warps versus wool warps were discussed. Historical progression as well as appearance of different dyes and designs were exposed to our hungry eyes and minds.
Plus the presentation was enhanced by one student’s especially acute questions, Sheryn. One Navajo weaver, Michael added special insights, as did a couple of textile conservationists who contributed still another dimension to this educational feast!
Collectors, dealers, anthropologists, student, weavers and one token art appraiser–all applauded this superb opportunity to know better that which we herald as beautiful, hand-made textiles!
In honor of this special opportunity, all textiles on SavvyCollector.com will be available for 10% off the SavvyCollector prices from November 11 (today) until December 15, 2012.
