Three Trees is one of Rembrandt’s most coveted etchings, only what was presented today fell way short.
- wrong paper (for a lifetime impression)
- wrong size (too small)
- no plate marks
- evidence of offset printing upon 5 power magnification
- a strange citation in the print’s margin
Bottomline, NONE of the above could be determined if the print had been examined in its existing frame behind glass.
Conclusion: SavvyCollectors purchasing a print by Rembrandt, Whistler or any early print maker of consequence should ask to see the print independent of framing.
Lifetime impressions of Three Trees by Rembrandt have sold several times for more than $100,000.00. The reproduction presented today in a gold frame with an attached metal plaque would not resemble $100.00 in value.
