19 years after securing the URL, FakeArt.org has been populated.
Why now ? An abundance of art forgeries have been surfacing.
Canvassed fellow art appraisers for artists whose work they’ve seen replicated:
Jean-Michel Basquiat, Thomas Hart Benton, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Keith Haring, Childe Hassam, John Marin, Albert Marquet, Joan Miro, Amadeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso, Rembrandt, Frederic Remington, Diego Rivera, John Singer Sargent, Victor Vasarely, James Whistler, Francisco Zuniga.
Sadly fake Fritz Scholder paintings have surfaced, along with drawings by Jaune Quick-to-See Smith.
FakeArt.org offers videos, podcasts, books, articles, lawsuits addressing the subject. No commerce, just information. Future educational webinars and conferences are identified as well.
SavvyCollectors want to avoid acquiring fraudulent art.
For instance, specify “drawing on old paper” on Ebay. 6,200+ want-to-be drawings anging in price from $1,800.00 down to $89, or best offer appear. Considerably below the item’s title is the language “in the style of the artist or as reproduction according Ebay rules”. However, this disclosure may not accompany the artwork beyond Ebay.
BBC’s Fake or Fortune series can be viewed using active links.
Hope you find FakeArt.org useful.
