“Drawing on old paper”
If you type in Ebay’s search box “Drawing on old paper”, more than 4300 hand drawn artworks are listed. Each and every one of them is a copy of an artwork by many hundreds of famous artists such as Renoir, DaVinci, Monet, Basquiat, Tamayo, Charles Schulz, Burchfield, Thiebaud, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, Harry Fonseca to name a few. Prices range from $9 to $1,800 or best offer. Sellers of these “drawings on old paper” are from Peru as well as the United States. Most of the listings describe the drawings as made in the style of a particular artist.
Where’s the danger ? You buy one. These art copies all wear the original artist’s signature on the drawing. When you tire of it and give it to a friend or to a charity thrift store, the language about it being a copy of a work by a famous artist likely does not accompany the drawing. An unpracticed eye may not identify the replica drawing for what it is, misguiding expectations of what the drawing could later be worth.
I suppose someone could keep the drawing on old paper for as long as they enjoyed it and then simply tear it up when ready to move on to different artworks.
It is rather peculiar that different sellers all word the title of what they are selling exactly the same.
