Baltimore’s Museum of Art’s acquisition budget for 2020, approximately $2 million, will be spent on women artists. 20 women-centric exhibitions are also planned for 2020. The Baltimore Museum’s specific action to offer more diversity in their role as a public forum for art may inspire other institutions to do likewise. Currently their permanent collection encompasses 4% women artists.
Wondering what percentage of women artists make up museum permanent collections nationwide????

SavvyCollector.com has always offered a Culture category to search: Women Artists
Sadly, female artists whose work appears on Savvy only make up close to 6.5%.

Museums tend to contain artifacts from the past. In the past women were denied the opportunity and encouragement to become artists. Hence there are fewer examples of excellent art produced by women in the PAST. Going forward we would hope and expect a much more equal gender representation when looking at contemporary art, but we cant remake the past just cos we don’t like it much.
