About the Artist

Walt Gonske was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1942. After graduating from the Newark School of Fine Arts. Gonske studied with illustrator Frank Reilly. He studied at the Art Students League in New York after which he had a successful career as a free-lance illustrator in New York, working for top publications including Esquire. Life. Playboy and The New Yorker. In 1972 at the age of thirty, he gave up his commercial career and moved to Taos, New Mexico to paint landscapes. Gonske has been widely recognized for his impressionistic paintings. especially his interpretations of the rich and colorful landscapes of New Mexico. He has also drawn inspiration from his travel to Portugal, Italy, France and Guatemala. Gonske is a member of the National Academy of Western Art. He has received many awards for his watercolors including from the Southwest Watercolor Society. Gonske's work has been exhibited at the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis, Indiana; the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma; the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming and the Prix de West Invitational at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.
