About the Artist

(1929-1974, Tesuque Pueblo) Hinds' Indian name was Grey Squirrel.

The book Southwest Indian Painting A Changing Art by Clara Lee Tanner uses a painting by Patrick Swazo Hinds for its cover illustration.  Cited as "one of the most outstanding of all the pueblo artists" in the above publication, Hinds received a B.A. degree from Oakland's College of Arts and Crafts followed by additional training at Mexico City College and at the Chicago Art Institute.

His solo shows took place in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Oklahoma at public institutions and at private art galleries. He won the Grand Award at the Scottsdale Art Exhibition in 1966 as well as the Phoenix Gazette Special Award in oil paintings and a first award in graphics at the Scottsdale National of 1971. He is described in Dorothy Dunn's book, American Indian Painting, in a chapter titled "Recent Developments".
