About the Artist
Mike Desatnick was born in Hammond, Indiana, in 1943. Desatnick was offered a scholarship to the American Academy of Art in Chicago. Due to family obligations, he was forced to forgo this education in favor of working in a local steel mill. He saw combat in Vietnam, which made him "decide that if I ever got out of there in one piece, I wanted to do something better with my life."
After he was discharged in 1967, he entered the Academy on the GI Bill and in two years won 22 awards. Before graduation, he was hired as a commercial artist. Two years later he was offered a position as instructor at the Academy where he taught for six years.
Desatnick’s subject matters are mostly Native American Indians and their traditional ceremonies. He has exhibited at the Allied Artists Show in New York, The Gene Autry Museum of Western Heritage show and the Indianapolis Hoosier Salon, where he was awarded first place in the figures and portraits.
Mike Desatnick is currently living and painting in Durango, Colorado.
