(Born 1952) (Cherokee) Born in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, Jesse Hummingbird studied art at the Watkins Adult Institute in Nashville, at the University of Tennessee at Nashville and at Middle Tennessee State University at Murfreesboro. He also pursued life drawing at the American Academy of Art in Chicago.
As a graphic artist, Hummingbird has illustrated several books and published cartoons. His mediums include pen and ink, prismacolor, graphite, acrylic, tempera and mixed media. He is a member of the Indian and Western Artists Association, the Inter-tribal Indian Ceremonial, the Inter-tribal Indian Club of Tulsa and the Indian Arts and Crafts Association.
This artist was the Featured Artist for the 2006 Pueblo Grande Indian Market in December in Phoenix, having been chosen 1996 Artist of the Year by the Indian Arts and Crafts Association. He also won the Best in Easel Art at the 2006 Tesoro Foundation Indian Market and Pow Wow, based on his acrylic painting titled "The Name is in the Song". Hummingbird and his wife, Sandy have also published four children's activity books and produced an animated film for the 2006 American Indian Film Institute.
