About the Artist

(1829-1904) John Rogers sought to make affordable genre sculptures for homes throughout the United States.

Originally Rogers' plaster figurine groups sold for as little as $15, easily within the means of the middle class. These compositions were inspired by popular novels, poems and prints as well as by every day life.

Rogers discarded his career as a machinist and draftsman in favor of gaining artistic training in Rome and in Paris.  In 1860 his sculpture titled Slave Auction prompted the attention of many art lovers. This was followed by a series of war statuette groups.

In excellent condition Rogers' groupings sell in excess of $3,000.
