(Born 1949) Susan Sponenberg's singular focus, horses, has permeated her artistic activities since attending grade school. A graduate of Maryland Institute College of Art, Susan next earned her Associate Instructor Riding Certificate at the Porlock Vale Riding School in England. Susan's portraits were all equines owned by staff at the school.
Sponenberg and other notable animal artists such as George Luther Schelling and Robert Kray were teaching at Luzerne County Community College, where she later held the office of Art Department head. The youngest member to be accepted into the Society of Animal Artists in 1974, Sponenberg has also been accepted into the American Academy of Equine Art, where she was been an associate member for over ten years.
Sponenberg's commissions include mural work at Yonkers Raceway, the Kentucky license plate, cover art for The Chronicle of the Horse, The Equine Marketer, The Virginian and Spur. She has also completed commissioned work for the United States Pony Club, Chapman Farms, owner of the 2004 Kentucky Derby winner, Smarty Jones and the Radnor Three Day International Event.
