About the Artist

James Turrell was born in Los Angeles, California and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Pomona College in Claremont, California in 1965. He attended art graduate studies at the University of California, Irvine then earned a Master of Art from Claremont Graduate School in 1973. Turrell's first solo exhibition was held at the Pasadena Art Museum in 1967 and since then, he has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions around the world including Paris, Poland, Japan, Germany, London, Netherlands and New York. Turrell has won many awards including the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship in 1974 and the Governor's Arts Award. Artist of the Year in Arizona in 1997. His art is in the public collections of such museums as the Chicago Art Institute. Illinois; Guggenheim Museum, New York; Hirshhorn Museum, Washington. D.C.. Center for Contemporary Arts, Santa Fe, New Mexico; Centre Cultural Arte Contemporaneo, Mexico City, Mexico and Foundation Cartier pour L'Art Contemporain, Paris. He was honored with retrospectives of his work at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York in 1980 and at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles in 1985. Turrell currently resides in Flagstaff, Arizona.
