A resident of Trinidad, Cuba, this artist's date of birth remains a mystery. It is sometimes cited as 1930.
All accounts name him as self-taught. Abel is known for subject matter to include scenes of the history of Trinidad and of the Cuban nation. He is also known for portraits of political and religious figures.
His work has been exhibited widely to include Barcelona, Spain; Mexico; New York, Philadelphia and his native Cuba. Abel has had more than 45 exhibitions since 1991.
His work is sold regularly by the Indigo Arts Gallery located in Philadelphia. Indigo Arts staged an exhibition Visiones 2: New Art from Cuba March 12-June 6, 2009 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Cuban revolution. It featured the work of Abel Mainegra along with the work of 9 other Cubano artists.
A family member indicated this gentleman died in 2011.
