About the Artist

Richard Anuskiewicz was born in Pennsylvania in 1930. He received his undergraduate degree from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1953. He then studied under Josef Albers at Yale University, where he earned an M.F.A. degree in 1955. Albers stirred his interest in coloperception. In the 1960s, Anuszkiewicz began to actively pursue the effects of color on perception, working in repeated geometric patterns, emanating in wave-like shapes from the center of the canvas. In 1965, he was included in a survey of "optical art" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, which brought him international attention and fame. Much of his work from the 1970s looked like computer printouts and investigated the effects of juxtaposed full intensity colors. Richard Anuskiewicz’s name is synonymous with the Op Art movement. He is recognized as one of the foremost colorists in American art. A retrospective of his work was held in January 1999, at the Boca Raton Museum of Art in Florida. His work is in museums and public and private collections world-wide.
