About the Artist

(Born 1948) Fearon Smith Jr. is the younger brother of Chief Don Lelooska (now deceased) and Patty Fawn (another talented artist). When Lelooska died in 1996, Tsungani became clan chief of the Wiummasgum Clan of the House of Lelooska and the House of Sewide. Tsungani's name means "he who excels".

Best known for his ceremonial masks, rattles, bentwood boxes and chests done in both traditional and contemporary styles, Tsungani is known to enjoy the creation of shaman figures and masks based on historical pieces. He was once very active as a main dancer, handling the large, articulated masks.
