About the Artist
Born in New York City, Vytlacil studied at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1906 and at the Art Students League on a scholarship in 1913. The artist first taught at the Minneapolis School of Art from 1916 to 1921. Travel to Europe resulted in his residing in Munich where he attended the Royal Academy of Art. There he met two other American artists, one leading him to study with Hans Hofmann. In 1936 he helped found the American Abstract Artists. In 1975 Vytlacil was honored by a retrospective exhibition held at the Montclair Art Museum in New Jersey.
