The current population of Sioux people is in excess of 150,000 with significant populations in South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, Montana and North Dakota in the United States. The name "Sioux" is an abbreviated form of Nadouessioux. The Sioux are divided into three ethnic groups, the larger of which are divided into sub-groups, and further branched into bands.
