About the Artist
North American Indians who lived along the seaward coast of Vancouver Island, Canada and the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state. Along with the Kwakiutl, the Nootka formed the Wakashan language family. These Wakashan tribes produced cedar bark checker matting. The Makah and the Nootka are recognized for their introduction of the unique style of basketry referred to as wrapped crossed warp. The Nootka are also known as the Nuu-chah-nuth.
