About the Artist
"While Grimm was born in Ukrania in 1898, Grimm was active in France as an artist from 1923. He was a painter and he made designs for tapestries."In his early work, his painting had a suggestion of Post-Impressionist influence, particularly Bonnard's. It was composed of tiny strokes of nuanced, justaposed colors, bathing his compositions in a lustrous light. . . Grimm was later sensitive to some elements of Post-Cubism. In a period of transition he favorted working in gouache, using soft, light-sensitive pigments. He painted still-lifes and a series of artist's studios in which the function and identify of objects are overriden by the plastic' ordering of the composition as a whole.
Shortly before 1960 Grimm manifested a kind of Abstraction that expressed the sum of his previous aesthetic experiences on a new, more personal register. He began to use color as an element of form, thus constructing his composition.
Grimm showed regularly at the Salon d'Automne, of which he was a member after 1962, Salon de Mail (from 1954 to 1956) and Salon Grands et Jeunes d'Aujourd'hui. He showed his work abroad at the autumn exhibition in Japan, in Germany, Poland, Iran, Luxembourg and Bulgaria.
Solo exhibition include: Paris (at which Bonnard bought a painting of his for the Musee d'Art Moderne) (1938); Galerie Pierre, Paris and Knoedler Gallery, New York (1949); London (1954); Paris (1957); Galerie Le Point Cardinal, Paris, Pierre Gallery, Stockholm, and Oslo (1962); homage exhibition in two rooms at the Salon d'Automne, Paris (1977); ensemble of his works from the 1960's, Galerie Point Cardinal, Paris (1985).
In 1964 Grimm was made a Chevalier des Arts et Lettres."
