About the Artist
"Brother of painter Afro Basaldella and the sculptor Gino Basadella, Mirko Basadella studied at the Fine Arts Academies in Venice and Florence. Mirko studied with the artist Arturo Martini, whose influence was particularly clear with respect to Mirko's figurative work. Having moved to Rome, Mirko was affected by his association with Corrado Cagli, an eclectic painter. Finally as a direct result of Afro's introduction of Mirko to the Cubist artists in Paris, Mirko's style became progressively more abstsract.
Subject matter for Mirko's work often stemmed from mythology as well as from 15th century Italian sculpture.
The 1954 Venice Biennale reserved an entire room for Mirko's work and in 1955 he was awarded the Grand Prix de Sculpture at the Sao Paulo Biennale. Mirko settled in the United States in 1957, at which time he was appointed curator of the Drawing Archive at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1965, the Castello Aquila accorded him a major retrospective (Homage to Mirko)."
