About the Artist

Born on St. Vincent Island, British West Indies, Hugh entered the Swansea Nautical College in South Wales to prepare for a seaman's career while in his twenties. In 1918 he became an American citizen, continuing his training at the Shipping Board in New York. Mulzac was barred the right to command a ship for many years, in spite of his captain's rating. Many years later he became a commander of the famous Liberty ship, Booker T. Washington. Captain Hugh Mulzac achieved the status of a naval hero of both World Wars. Mulzac's paintings are based on his memories. Without any formal art training, Mulzac's work attracted representation by 57th Street art dealers. There is a special directness to the artist's treatment of subject matter.
