About the Artist

A Native American tribe, one of the Pueblo peoples, most of whom live in the Pueblo of Zuni on the Zuni River, a tributary of the Little Colorado River, in western New Mexico. Zuni is approximately 35 miles south of Gallup, New Mexico, with a population of about 12,000. Traditionally "Zuni" also references their language. The Zunis are known for their functional pottery used for food and storage, as well as for ceremonial application. They also created kachina dolls. Fetish carvings are a specialty with which this tribe is associated. Miniaturized carvings of fetishes are often a feature of their jewelry, along with labor-intensive inlay work.
