About the Artist

"After several years of studying art in New York City and then with Frederic Taubes at the University of Wisconsin, Robert Watson had his first solo exhibition at Gumps in San Francisco in 1948. A subsequent glowing review of his show in the newspaper launched the artist's career. Robert was represented in solo exhibitions in other major U.S. cities as well as London, Paris, Venice, Athens and Jerusalem. The artist's work is included in the permanent collection of the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. His painting was used as the cover art for Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles, second dition, printed in 1953. On May 17, 1997, Watson had his 50 year retrospective show at the Weinstein Galleries of San Francisco. Mayor Willie Brown proclaimed that day to be "Robert Watson Day" in San Francisco." Excerpted from a biography submitted to by the artist's son, Tony Watson.
