About the Artist
Fletcher Martin was born in the small western town of Palisade, Colorado, where his father ran the newspaper. As a boy, his family moved throughout the west. His interest in art developed primarily from circus posters and amateur artists. He began working as a printer at age twelve and later dropped out of high school. working at various jobs. including as a lumberjack and a boxer.
He served in the Navy from 1922-26, then began working for Earl Hays printers in Los Angeles. For thirty years, he was a visiting teacher in California art schools, including Mills College, Otis Art Institute and Claremont College. In 1943-33. he served as an artist and war correspondent for Life magazine, traveling to Africa and Normandie.
He has exhibited at the Carnegie Institute. Corcoran Gallery, the Metropolitan Museum and the National Academy of Design. Martin died in New York City in 1979.
