About the Artist

Born circa 1900 on the Potawatomi Reservation in Oklahoma, Louis Shipshee later lived in Topeka, Kansas. He served in World War I. Shipshee worked as an industrial crafts instructor, an interior designer and instructor, a textbook author, a house painter and a free-lance artist. He chose to use oil and acrylic paint for his paintings. Shipshee is named in Jeanne Snodgrass's book American Indian Painters: A Biographical Directory (1968), J.J. Brody's Indian Painters and White Patrons (1971) and Patrick Lester's The Biographical Directory of Native American Painters (1995). His work is in the permanent collection of the Heritage Center Incorporated Collection at the Red Cloud Indian School and the Southeast Museum of the North American Indian in Marathon, Florida (now housed in the Denver Museum of Natural History).
