About the Artist
"Sam Harris was born in Los Angeles, California in 1919. The son of well known California plein air artist, Sam Hyde Harris, he settled on his vocation at an early age. Painting in the impressionist manner, his works are presented in various media.Harris received a 4 year scholarship to the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. At the Otis Institute he studied with Ralph Homes, Biddle, Alexander Brook, Vysekal, and others.During World War II he was in the US Air Force, serving in India and China. While in China he had the time to study Chinese painting. There he studied under Professor Tong of Kumming, learning the art of silk and rice paper painting. While in India he painted several large murals for the US Special Services. After the war he moved to the Monterey Peninsula where he studied at the Carmel Art Institute with John Cunningham, Archipenko, and Lusk.Most of Harris’ painting career was spent in Europe, where he traveled extensively while painting and exhibiting. In 1964 he moved to Europe, eventually settling in Paris, where his art career flourished. He also lived in Rome for several years, where he met his wife Silvana.Harris has exhibited widely in this country and throughout Europe including the Carmel Art Association, and the Crocker Art Gallery (now the Crocker Museum). He has been an award winner in many of the venues in which he has exhibited his works. Harris has been a long time Artist Member of the prestigious Carmel Art Association.He presently resides and paints in Carmel, California with his wife Silvana.
