About the Artist
Having written his own biography, Journey to the Clay, Robert Naranjo informs us tht his father, Juan shaped Robert's strong sense of responsibility. A government employee, working with the Bureau of Indian Affairs for 37 years, Juan instilled in his son the notion of accountability.
Robert's career as a potter originated in 1982. To embellish his polished blackware pottery, he carves, etches and uses inventive slip applications. His mother Mollie and his Aunt Julie Martinez provided Robert's pottery making training.
From the first year of his pottery commitment to present, Robert has been selected for all categories of awards at Indian Market in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in Colorado and in Indianapolis at the Eiteljorg Museum.
The above biographical information was derived from Gregory Schaaf's book Pueblo Indian Pottery 750 Artist Biographies, 2000.
