About the Artist

(1938-2000) Robert Draper was born in Chinle, Arizona and belonged to the Navajo and Hopi tribes.

He was involved in art since his childhood, studying at Brigham City, Utah. Since 1966 he participated in major Western and Native American art exhibits and competitions and won several awards. Robert, wife Ruby and their five children last resided in Chinle where he was a full-time painter.

This artist is listed in Jeanne Snodgrass’ American Indian Painters A Biographical Dictionary (1968), J.J. Brody’s volume Indian Painters and White Patrons (1971), Clara Lee Tanner’s book Southwest Indian Painting: A Changing Art (1973) as well as Patrick Lester’s book The Biographical Directory of Native American Painters (1995). Draper was well known for his realistic landscapes of the Navajo Reservation
