About the Artist

Hugh and Agnes Bowekaty, Zuni jewelers, are described in depth in Gregory Schaaf's newest volume American Indian Jewelry I. Agnes is named as having been active between 1951 and 1977 specializing in needlepoint jewelry. Her husband, Hugh's active dates are roughly the same. The last award Hugh received is a 2nd place for a needlepoint bracelet created for the Inter-tribal competition at Gallup, New Mexico in 2002. Both artists were also featured in Volume 3 of Zuni the Art and the People by Ed and Barbara Bell. In it a needlepoint bracelet with five rows is wearing a blue ribbon. Two pages in the Bell book are devoted to a total of twelve examples of Hugh and Agnes' work.
